As I come from a clinical background, RICE to me for many years meant Rest - Ice - Compression - Elevation.
However, when it comes to business and I put a commercial hat on, RICE means Reward - Ideology - Coercion - Ego.
It is a framework I came across recently and I can see its applicability across many aspects of life and business. Whether you’re trying to persuade someone to work with you, you are pitching an idea or trying to make a connection, this framework is important to consider.
This framework allows you to understand motivation and allows you to connect with people, build relationships and influence actions. So what do the points mean:
Reward involves anything the other person desires
Ideology reflects the person’s core beliefs and values
Coercion involves using negative behaviours on someone
Ego relates to how the other person sees themselves.
Traditionally, this is a framework that has been used in the Secret Service arena. However, let's relate it to business marketing for example. Sending targeted messages to your audience and assessing their responses, allows you to gain insights into their ideology, providing you with useful information for future communications.
Here's the example:
Start with what people believe in; their Ideology: What is the prospect stating?
Make them feel good; Ego: A compliment never hurts anyone!
Sweeten the deal; Reward: Is there a way to make this a win-win?
Nudge them along if they're scared of missing out; Coercion.
I think the absolute key for me still becomes authenticity because without it, it can just look like another sales pitch. However, when delivered with authenticity, this approach has the power to elevate strategic communication.
What are your thoughts on this framework and how can you use it?
What is the future?
My career has spanned health, fitness and wellbeing and I wanted to provide a summary of my current thoughts.
Healthcare is generally reactive and provides the services needed for you to maintain and improve your health. It is strained, in increasing demand and has challenges around funding and service remuneration.
Wellness is preventative and focuses on healthy habits to attain better physical and mental health outcomes. It is personalised, consumer led and innovative, to allow people to perform and thrive in life.
Where is the intersection and what do I believe is the future?
To me it is WellCare.
What are your thoughts?
